A Dual-band and Dual-Polarized Wearable Repeater Antenna for Wireless Body Area Networks

This paper presents a dual-band and dual-polarized wearable repeater antenna for wireless body area networks (WBAN). The proposed antenna exhibits an omnidirectional radiation pattern and horizontal polarization in the 2.4 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band (2.4-2.48 GHz) for communication with implantable device, as well as directional radiation and circular polarization (CP) in the 5.8 GHz ISM band (5.725-5.875 GHz) for communication with external monitoring device. The dual band and dual-polarization are achieved by slotting operation. The simulated -10 dB impedance bandwidths on human tissue are 6.1% (2.37-2.52 GHz) and 6.9% (5.60-6.00 GHz), and the simulated 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth is 7.8% (5.54-5.99 GHz). The antenna is a suitable antenna for biomedical applications.
