Ray Tracing Calculation of RF Emissions from a Mobile Radio Base Station in a Typical Urban Environment for the Assessment of Human Exposure

According to the Italian national and regional laws, the assessment of human exposure to RF emission from a Mobile Radio Base Station (SRB or BTS) is a fundamental step in building a mobile phone network, as it is required for each emission produced by an antenna. The compliance evaluation with RF human exposure guidelines is usually performed through EMF calculation. Different approaches can be adopted: usually the Far Field formula is used to evaluate the EMF value, but other algorithms are known in literature to improve the degree of accuracy. For example, Ray Tracing algorithms allow to take into account environment objects or each wave propagation obstacle; a cylindrical wave approach allows to extend the assessment in near field region. The purpose of this paper is to assess the electromagnetic field human exposure produced by SRB in a typical urban environment, by using the methodologies mentioned above. Moreover, the results will be obtained by applying different spatial averaging schemes, as required by the International guidelines, when Ray Tracing algorithms are used.
