Bottom Bar vs Hamburger Navigational Menu Design: A Comparative Analysis in Coffee Shop Mobile Application Using the SUS Methodology

The growth of application usage is steadily expanding. The global count of mobile application downloads has been consistently rising since 2016, reaching over 255 billion by 2022. The coffee shop industry has also experienced a significant impact from the surge in mobile application usage. Data from 2021 reveals that the majority of food and beverage orders originate from mobile applications. The heightened utilization of mobile applications in the coffee shop industry encouraged the innovation of enhanced features to improve customer experience. This research aims to investigate the user experience differences between the usage of the hamburger menu and bottom bar menu designs in a mobile application in a coffee shop case study. The study offers recommendations from its findings for practitioners in the coffee shop industry and further research. The research utilized the System Usability Scale (SUS) methodology, incorporating tools such as task scenarios and questionnaires. Results revealed a 99 percent task completion rate for the bottom bar navigation design in the coffee shop mobile app, while the hamburger menu navigation design achieved a 98 percent completion rate. In conclusion, the bottom bar navigation design proves to be more effective in aiding users in task completion compared to the hamburger menu.
