Analyzing and Learning Semantic Transparency of Chinese Compound Words

The Chinese language is quite complex, and each word carries multiple meanings. Thus, when two words are joined in compound words, the problem of interpreting their meaning intensifies. This research aims to analyze the semantic transparency of Chinese compound words based on the meaning of their components. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, beginning with the selection of 600 vocabulary words from HSK Level 3. From these, a total of 258 compound words were chosen as the data, with a distribution of 152 noun compounds, 74 verb compounds, and 32 adjective compounds. The meanings of these compounds were analyzed based on semantic transparency, consisting of transparent and opaque meanings. The results of this research are expected to contribute to Chinese language learning, and by using the Wordwall game-based application, it can help the students better understand compound words, specifically Chinese-English compound words.
