Zero-Bezel Flexible Active-Matrix Micro-LED Display Using Through-Plastic Vias and Its Seamless Tiling

We developed a new flexible display structure using through-plastic vias (TPV s) with intermediate connecting electrodes to realize zero-bezel displays. By using TPV s to connect signal wires formed on the front and back sides of the polyimide film substrate, we can form signal input lines on the back side of the display screen, instead of in the bezel as in conventional displays, thereby eliminating the bezel. In addition, intermediate connecting electrodes were introduced to suppress conduction failure between the front- and back-side signal wires. In this way, we successfully developed zero-bezel flexible active-matrix micro- LED displays (160^x160 pixels, 133 ppi) using TPVs with intermediate connecting electrodes. The margin width around the screen is less than 15 um, which is negligibly narrow compared to the I-mm bezel width of typical narrow-bezel displays. Further-more, a tiled flexible active-matrix micro-LED display (320^x320 pixels, 133 ppi) was constructed by seamlessly tiling four zero-bezel displays, demonstrating the feasibility of flexible customization of display size, shape, and aspect ratio with our new display.
