Resilience Analysis of Distribution Networks to Extreme Weather Events Using Monte Carlo Simulation

This paper analyzes the resilience of distribution networks against extreme weather events using Monte Carlo Simulation. The IEEE 33-bus distribution system is used as a test system to assess the impacts of hurricane-induced stresses. Key performance metrics such as voltage stability, failure probability of network components (poles and lines), and efficiency of restoration of interrupted loads are evaluated to identify system vulnerabilities. The study further examines the effectiveness of prioritized load restoration strategies that identify and prioritize critical loads for faster restoration during an extreme event. Simulation results reveal significant voltage drops and high failure probabilities as wind speeds increase, highlighting the urgent need for effective restoration and reinforcement strategies. These insights can guide infrastructure upgrade priorities and enhance resilience in distribution networks exposed to extreme weather conditions.
