Modelling and Simulation Approach of DoS Attack for the Synchrophasor Communication Network Using NS-3

The resilience and security of Synchrophasor Communication Networks (SCN) are crucial for the reliable operation of modern power systems. In this direction, Denial of Service (DoS) attacks is one of the approaches for evaluating the network performance from these perspectives. This paper focuses on the modeling and simulation of DoS attacks using the NS-3 (Network Simulator 3) platform. We present a simplified approach to obtain an analytical model of SCN. Further, a comprehensive framework for simulating the communication infrastructure that can be utilized for SCN is presented. The simulation framework incorporates the DoS attack scenarios and their impact on network performance. Our approach leverages NS-3's capabilities to accurately model network behaviors under attack conditions, and analyze the network performance with vital parameters including transmitted bit rate, received bit rate, delay, etc.
