Enhancing Power System Resilience with DG Using GA Based Relay Coordination and FCL Integration

In this paper, an adaptive protection strategy is proposed to address the impact of Distributed Generation (DG) on the Coordination Time Interval (CTI) between primary and backup relay pairs in power system networks. The integration of DG often disrupts relay coordination, leading to system reliability issues. To mitigate this issue, the proposed method utilizes Fault Current Limiters (FCLs) to restore relay coordination. Key factors such as network topology variations, along with the optimal number and sizing of FCLs, are taken into consideration. By dynamically activating and deactivating FCLs, the strategy ensures optimal relay coordination. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) is employed to further optimize this process, enabling reliable coordination between primary and backup relays. The proposed approach effectively restores relay coordination in the presence of DG, thereby improving the overall reliability of the power system.
