Ground Based Augmentation Systems (GBAS) with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)

This paper offers a comparative examination of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS), in context of their use in precise direction-finding and locating. By offering real-time corrections based on local observations, GBAS increases the accuracy of GNSS and, within its coverage region, considerably improves positional integrity and accuracy. On the other hand, global positioning systems (GNSS) namely, Global Positioning System (GPS), Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS), Galileo, BeiDou provide continuous positioning services and worldwide coverage. However, their accuracy may be compromised by air disturbances and errors in the satellite orbit. The comparative analysis shows that in some areas, particularly those close to airports, GBAS offers more precision as it facilitates the approaches and landings with narrower vision and greater safety margins. Its usefulness is constrained to locations with GBAS infrastructure, which results in its regional application. On the other hand, GNSS offers wider coverage worldwide, and is more adaptable, making it suitable for a variety of uses including scientific research and navigation. The study assesses the accuracy, coverage, cost, and infrastructure requirements of both systems, highlighting the fact that GNSS offers broad, global positioning capabilities, whereas the GBAS offers localized precision enhancements; therefore, the relative advantages of each system depend on particular usage case and the geographic context.
