I-MMDS: Manhole Monitoring and Detection System Using IoT

In Modern day swiftly changing urban environments, ensuring the maintenance and safety of essential infrastructure, such as manholes, has become critically important. Manholes are vital for the effective operation of sewer systems, yet they present substantial challenges regarding maintenance, safety, and the early identification of problems. Conventional methods frequently lack the capacity to offer real-time, comprehensive solutions. This is where the Internet of Things (IoT) emerges as a revolutionary solution. The objective of this research is to develop a prototype-based manhole monitoring system. This system comprises sensors such as DHT11 for temperature and humidity monitoring inside the manhole, ultrasonic sensors for water level measurement, gas sensors for detecting hazardous gases, and tilt sensors to track the status of the manhole cover (open or closed). The results include real-time monitoring and visualization of these parameters using a cloud-based platform like Thing Speak. Quantifiable results will include precise measurements of temperature, humidity, water levels, gas concentrations, and manhole cover status, enabling proactive maintenance and timely interventions to enhance safety and operational efficiency in urban environments. This result improved the performance of the real-time developed kit, achieving a 90% increase over the other models.
