Wideband MIMO 5G Antennas for Handset Devices

In this work, a design of a MIMO antenna array is proposed for 5G communication systems. The proposed individual antenna element is constructed from a modified PIFA structure of L and H geometry. The proposed antenna is oriented to suit the frequency bands of n77 (3.3GHz-4.2GHz) and n79 (4.GHz4-5GHz) with an excellent matching coefficient. The proposed antenna when located in an array configuration, an excellent isolation is achieved below -15dB over the entire frequency bands of interest. For that, four elements are oriented on a rectangular FR-4 substrate to obtain an excellent size reduction of 13.4mm×6mm×0.75mm. The proposed work is optimized using HFSS and validated using CST MWS. From the obtained results in terms of S-parameters and radiation patterns, the antenna shows an excellent radiation properties and enhanced bandwidth. The obtained results from both CST and HFSS agreed well to each other.
