A Multifunctional System Configuration Integrated With PV-Grid-Energy Storage and IPT-Based EV Charging for Residential Energy Management

This article proposes a power conversion system that integrates photovoltaic (PV), energy storage (ES), and light electric vehicle (EV) loads for both grid-connected and standalone residential applications. To achieve this objective a multiport interleaved H-bridge (MP-IHB) configuration is proposed using a conventional H-bridge overlapped with interleaved bidirectional buck-boost operation. Additionally, an inductive power transfer (IPT) system is integrated in to the MP-IHB converter to charge the EV’s ES. When the system is connected to the utility grid, a grid side converter (GSC) interfaces with the dc-link to supply/take the power to maintain the power balance in the system. Under islanded operation, the PV and ES sources act as backup to supply total load power. The other benefits of the proposed system are that the dc-link is established through the series connection of PV and ES sources which provides the inherent boosting of the voltage, requires less number of devices and increased utilization of the converters. To realize the above functions, this article presents the detailed operation and analysis of the proposed system. A mathematical modeling of the proposed MP-IHB configuration is derived and a control algorithm is designed to manage the power flow in the system. Finally, the experimental setup is developed in the laboratory to verify the proposed system’s performance under dynamic conditions, achieving a maximum dc-dc efficiency of nearly 94% at 1.2 kW IPT load.
