Understanding Social Presence in Extended Reality: A Bibliometric Analysis Based on Web of Science Database Using Bibliometrix RStudio and Citespace

Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) are spatial interface technologies and concepts that have been researched for many years by professionals in engineering, computer science, and human-computer interaction (HCI). Recently, the term "Extended Reality" (XR) has emerged as a collective designation for VR, AR, and MR technologies, and it is increasingly being integrated into educational practices. As a social activity, social presence during education and teaching can greatly contribute to the improvement of learning outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to sort out the social presence in XR through Bibliometric. The analysis methods include statistical analysis, co-occurrence analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis and social network analysis. By searching and filtering in web of science, the authors obtained a total of 200 literatures and analyzed them by using Bibliometrix R. 4.4.0 and Citespace 6.3.R1. The results show that the number of related research literature is increasing and stable, and the focus of the research gradually demonstrates the attention to the details of the design of XR environments.
