Impact of Integration of Renewable Energy on Protection of the Distribution System

Modern power distribution networks enhance their capacity by integrating renewable energy resources (RES). However, RES integration into traditional distribution systems poses protection challenges, such as changes in fault current and altered fault current paths. This paper investigates the impact of distributed generation (DG) on over-current protection in distribution networks. The system model has been simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC software. The IEEE-13 node test feeder system is used for performance analysis of protection system with and without photovoltaic system. The results show the impact of photovoltaic systems at different feeder locations ($25 \%, 50 \%, 75 \%$, and $100 \%$ of the length) for LG, LLG, and LLLG faults.
