High-Resolution Detection of Moving Targets Using Stepped-Frequency Signal for mmWave FMCW Radar

In this paper, we propose a method to perform high-precision velocity measurement and high-resolution range measurement for stepped-frequency millimeter wave (mmWave) radar. To this end, a novel algorithm is developed to iteratively compensate the quadratic phase and measure velocity, while achieving high target peak power to ensure detection performance. Then, motion compensation and inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) are performed separately for each chirp signal to obtain high-resolution range measurement results in the slow-time dimension. Finally, numerical simulations demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of velocity and range measurements, respectively.
