An Empirical Study of Online Machine Translation as an Aid to Academic English Writing

In recent years, the accuracy of machine translation output has significantly improved, greatly enhancing the potential for utilizing online machine translation software in English writing instruction and practice. This study aims to explore the application of online machine translation in academic writing, mainly focusing on its impact on students’ writing outcome. Texts generated by students using online translation software with those produced through independent writing are analyzed in terms of vocabulary, syntax, and grammar. The results show that with the assistance of online machine translation tools, the quality of students’ writing has significantly improved, and the accuracy of vocabulary and grammar has been enhanced. In conclusion, online machine translation tools play an important role in academic writing, serving as an effective auxiliary tool to help students improve their writing skills and language proficiency.
