A Review of Traffic Management: Real-Time Monitoring and Dynamic Control

India, at present the largest democracy in the world, has the second largest network of roads globally, but it is failing miserably to contain traffic in its rapidly growing cities. The traditional thinking in traffic control fails to provide solutions for the burgeoning car ownership, the expanding scope of urban streets, and the peculiarities of the environment. This paper looks at the current traffic management technologies which include RFID, VANETs, energy harvesting, and adaptive traffic control systems and their advantages and disadvantages. To overcome these drawbacks, we propose a traffic management system that consists of sound and vibration sensors, piezoelectric energy harvesting, edge computing, and the EDF algorithm for dynamic signal control. The use of Augmented Reality (AR) displays will enable drivers to receive real-time traffic information and so enrich their driving experience. This system aims at providing effective traffic flow, reduction of traffic jams, increased sustainability through low reliance on external power and real time conditions. The potential future work should be aimed at enhancing the algorithms of machine learning, increasing energy effectiveness and achieving better security and system scalability.
