Modeling and Simulating PMSG based Wind Turbines using a Fuzzy Logic Controlled DC-Link Protection Scheme

The electricity produced by wind turbines with PMSGs (permanent magnet synchronous generators) is typically sent to the grid using a device known as a back-to-back converter. Faults within the transmission system can cause power imbalances between the converters, leading into a considerable rise in the DC-link voltage. This voltage surge poses a risk of damaging the system of converters and negatively impacting the system’s overall temporary stability. Several methods have been proposed to control the overvoltage in the DC-link, including the installation of unloading circuits or to absorb extra power, devices for energy storage are added to the DC-link bus. However, these approaches necessitate additional equipment, increasing system costs and complicating the control strategy. In conventional systems, a DC chopper and a braking resistor are typically employed across the DC-link to guarantee the stability of active power. These protection mechanisms are not effective in managing the dissipated power in a productive manner. This study suggests a fuzzy logic-controller for the DC-link circuit in order to solve this problem. To manage overvoltage in the DC-link and stabilize the output power of PMSG-based wind energy systems, a DC-link voltage control technique based on fuzzy logic is presented. Simulations of the PMSG-based wind energy system confirm that this fuzzy logic control approach is effective.
