Modeling of Lithium-Ion Battery with Thermal Analysis

This study presents a comprehensive modelling approach for analyzing the thermal behaviour of lithium-ion batteries using COMSOL Multiphysics. Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in various applications ranging from portable electronics to electric vehicles, and understanding their thermal characteristics is crucial for optimizing their performance, safety, and lifespan. The proposed model incorporates electrochemical reactions, electrolyte transport, heat transfer mechanisms, and thermal expansion effects to accurately simulate the thermal behaviour of lithium-ion batteries under different operating conditions. The geometry of the battery cell is created and meshed, and material properties are defined for each component. Boundary conditions are applied to simulate realistic operating conditions, and the solver settings are configured to ensure accurate and efficient simulations. Post-processing tools are utilized to visualize temperature distributions, current density, voltage profiles, and other relevant quantities, providing valuable insights into the thermal performance of lithium-ion batteries. The novelty of this study lies in its integration of electrochemical reactions, electrolyte transport, and thermal expansion effects within the COMSOL environment to offer a more comprehensive and precise simulation of lithium-ion batteries' thermal behaviour.
