Fault-Tolerant Control Under Switch Short-Circuit and Open-Circuit Faults for Parallel Winding Current Source Inverter

The power semiconductor device is one of the most fragile components in power electronic converters. In current source inverter (CSI), switch open-circuit faults cause voltage spikes and switch short-circuit faults deteriorate the performance of the system. This paper proposes a novel topology of CSI, which is called parallel winding current source inverter (PWCSI). PWCSI has more freedom in current space vector comparing to traditional CSI with star-connected winding. This topology can work with steady electromagnetic torque and speed under switch short-circuit or open-circuit faults, which can greatly improve the reliability of the motor drive system. The corresponding fault-tolerant control method is analyzed in detail. Experimental results are provided to verify the performance of PWCSI and the effectiveness of the proposed fault-tolerant control strategy.
