Design of an On-Axis Electrically Excited Synchronous Motor for Heavy Commercial Vehicles

Significant progress has been made in the commercialization of electric passenger vehicles, yet the electrification of heavy commercial vehicles has seen limited development. A high starting torque and a wide speed range are essential, as the vehicle operates frequently close to its peak power. Choosing the right electric motor is crucial for meeting these demands. Electrically excited synchronous motors are a promising option for this type of application. In this study, the design process of an on-axis electric motor is illustrated. To evaluate the performance of the electric machine, a drive cycle for heavy duty trucks is conducted. Furthermore, the benefits of optimal control of the rotor excitation current are highlighted.
