Active structural control of floating offshore wind turbine based on PID controller and resonant filter*

This work proposes a floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) platform pitch control based on an active tuned mass damper (ATMD) with a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller and a resonant filter. Among the contributions of this work are a FOWT platform pitch linear reduced transfer function model, a PID controller tuning method and a resonant filter to reject sinusoidal disturbances. Simulation results when the FOWT is subjected to steady wind and periodic waves, a challenging simulation case, show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. By using the integrated absolute error (IAE) performance index to measure the reduction in oscillations, these results showed a reduction in the oscillations of up to −48.66% for the platform pitch angle and up to −31.85% for the turbine generator power.
