Design and Analysis of a Single-Sided 2.2kW Axial-Flux Induction Motor

This paper presents the design and analysis of a single-sided axial-flux induction motor (AFIM), a line-start 2.2kW motor with eight poles. The design of the AFIM is based on a commercial 2.2kW radial-flux induction motor (RFIM) with consideration of predefined electric and magnetic loading limits, which are used to find the most cost-effective design with equivalent efficiency to the commercial RFIM. Finite-element analysis (FEA) is utilized for electromagnetic performance prediction of the designed AFIM and compared with the benchmark RFIM. The simulation results confirm that the AFIM has the advantages of higher efficiency and lower material cost. The paper provides a detailed introduction to the procedure for designing the AFIM, including the mechanical design recommendations regarding the shaft, bearing selection and motor frame.
