Real-Time Digital Simulation, Modelling and Control of a Grid Connected Distributed Energy Storage for Supervisory Control

The growing integration of distributed energy storage into the power network will require a variety of grid support and energy management functions. This paper investigates a real-time digital simulation model of grid integrated distributed energy storage, which enables the investigation of supervisory central control to coordinate local units. The implementation of the telecommunication and supervisory control is thus also considered, i.e. the interaction of central supervisory command states and local controllers through the telecommunication system delays. An example of control state transition logic is presented, which determines and defines the inverter control state based on the states of the energy storage and the supervisory controller. The defined states are tested on the developed real-time digital simulator model and some of the constraints of a real-time implementation, and mitigation, are discussed.
