Thermoelectrically Induced Thermal Stimuli in Madagascar Hissing Cockroach

Electrical stimulation of the antennae and cerci is a common method for controlling cockroach movement, but it presents limitations such as invasiveness and habituation. This research explores alternative method for manipulating cockroach locomotion. One promising approach is thermal stimulation, which leverages the insect’s natural sensitivity to temperature changes. Our study aims to utilize thermal stimulation to trigger an aversion response in cockroaches, thereby influencing their behavior. The experimental setup involved recording cockroach movements with a high-resolution camera and analyzing their escape responses under various thermal stimuli conditions. Our findings demonstrate that heat stimulation can trigger cockroach movement, inducing both forward motion and turning behaviors.
