Power Control Strategy of Inertia-Flywheel Energy Storage System Based on Model Predictive Control

To address the issues of grid inertia deficiency and frequency regulation caused by the increased penetration of wind and photovoltaic power, a study was conducted on an inertia-flywheel energy storage system based on an electromagnetic coupler. This system is connected to the grid through a synchronous machine interface, providing direct mechanical inertia support for the renewable energy power system. At the same time, the electromagnetic coupler endows the system with a certain energy storage capacity. The inertia-flywheel energy storage system is mathematically modeled, and a power control strategy for the electromagnetic coupler of the inertia flywheel storage system based on model predictive control is proposed. The selection of the cost function in model predictive control is studied. The control strategy is verified on the MATLAB/Simulink simulation platform, and the simulation results confirm that the control strategy of the inertia-flywheel energy storage system has excellent dynamic response capability, with extremely fast response speed and almost no overshoot.
