Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy as a Novel Approach to Acrophobia Treatment

Acrophobia, or the fear of heights, is a common anxiety disorder that significantly impacts daily functioning and quality of life. Traditional treatment methods, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), have demonstrated some success, but they often require considerable time and resources. This study investigates the efficacy of Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) as an alternative treatment for acrophobia. Using immersive virtual environments, VRET provides controlled and safe exposure to height-related scenarios, allowing individuals to confront and manage their fears. Participants were randomly assigned to either a VRET group or a CBT control group, and their acrophobia symptoms were measured before and after treatment using the Acrophobia Questionnaire (AQ). The results showed a significant reduction in anxiety and avoidance behaviors in the VRET group, with an average decrease in AQ scores of 49.6 points, compared to a minimal change of 1.07 points in the control group. These findings suggest that VRET is a highly effective treatment for acrophobia, offering a viable and innovative alternative to traditional therapeutic methods.
