Effective Model of Boost Converter Based on Simulink MATLAB

The boost converter is widely used in various DC-DC power conversion systems to step up the voltage from a direct current (DC) source. This paper presents a comparative study of a boost converter model implemented in Simulink using two approaches: mathematical equation-based modeling and a circuit-based model utilizing Simulink library components. The results show that the mathematical model produces an output voltage of 24.03V with a maximum overshoot of 90.5%, a steady-state time of 0.35s, and a conversion efficiency of 49%. In contrast, the circuit-based model delivers an output voltage of 23.14V, with a maximum overshoot of 81.5%, a steady-state time of 0.012s, and a conversion efficiency of 52%. The voltage regulation for the mathematical model is measured at 0.88%, while the circuit-based model achieves 0.82%. While the mathematical model provides a more accurate output voltage, it suffers from significant overshoot and a longer time to reach steady state. Conversely, the circuit-based model exhibits a faster transient response but less accurate voltage output. Additionally, the study highlights that the difference in switching components between the two models plays a crucial role in their performance. The mathematical model uses a simplified switch representation that focuses solely on ON/OFF transitions, which eases theoretical analysis. However, the circuit-based model incorporates a MOSFET, capturing more complex physical behaviors like internal resistance, capacitance, and switching losses, resulting in simulation outcomes that are closer to real-world conditions. This trade-off between simplicity and accuracy underlines the strengths and limitations of each approach in modeling the boost converter.
