Mechanical Design of a Common Coil Magnet With RMC Coils (ISAAC)

One of the configurations under study to produce high-field magnets for future colliders, specifically FCC-hh at CERN, is the common coil configuration. A significant challenge in its design is the mechanical structure, due to the large electromagnetic forces arising during operation. As a first step, two Racetrack Model Coils (RMC) already produced at CERN are going to be assembled in common coil configuration in a model magnet called ISAAC (Investigating Superconducting Assembly to Address Common coil mechanics). This model aims to validate the mechanical design strategy before the manufacture of a complete 14 T common coil demonstrator magnet at CIEMAT premises. This paper depicts the detailed mechanical design of the ISAAC magnet. The preload of the coils at cold conditions is moderate to avoid dangerous stress concentration at the Nb₃Sn cables. However, a very rigid support structure limits the coil movement at reasonable values, both from the point of view of field quality and training. The magnet will be assembled inside an aluminium shell using bladder and keys. The final magnetic design is also described.
