Polarizability Tensors From Characteristic Modes

The polarizabilities of scatterers are crucial when designing metasurfaces and artificial materials. In this article, polarizability tensors are recovered from the knowledge of characteristic modes with the main result being the characteristic decomposition of these polarization tensors. The method is compared with the six-wave method, which is taken as the ground truth in cases where analytical results are unavailable. The numerical results of the proposed method are presented on examples covering all its aspects. In particular, four different shapes were studied: a conducting asymmetric helix, a conducting cubic resonator showing an isotropic magnetic response, a single-split-ring resonator made of silver, and a dielectric dimer showing an almost pure bianisotropic response.
