Virtual Labs for Mechanical dynamics – a distraction OR a catalyst for better learning

This paper discusses the inclusion of a series of virtual laboratories into a second-year mechanical dynamics class. The goal was to explore if these virtual laboratories could improve the motivation levels of the student cohort and also enhance the learning and understanding outcomes of the students. Traditional teaching methods present mechanisms as static two-dimensional sketches, limiting students' ability to visualize motion and connect theoretical analyses to physical responses. By integrating a Simulation Based Learning (SBL) component, the study aims to assess whether such interactive virtual laboratories impact students' ability to understand the subject matter and their motivation to learn. The approach considered includes a MATLAB®, Simulink® and Simscape™ Multibody™ based mini project designed to deepen students' understanding of dynamics through problem-solving, analytical solutions verification, and the use of numerical methods for complex problems.
