Comparison and design of the transverse flux motor with axial and radial permanent magnet for electrical propulsion system

With the continuous development of power electronics and energy storage technologies, multi-electric/all-electric aircraft are receiving more and more attention. Electric motors are an important power source for electric propulsion systems. This paper presents the potential of transverse flux permanent magnet motors (TFPMMs) applied to electric propulsion systems. A novel TFPM with axial-radial permanent magnets (ARPM-TFM) is proposed. The structural features, working principle, and advantages of ARPM-TFM are further introduced. A 3D FEA model was established to verify the electromagnetic performances of ARPM-TFM in terms of back EMF, output torque, and cogging torque. Similarly, 3D FEA models of other TFPMs were built, and their electromagnetic performances were obtained. After comparison, the advantages and shortcomings of ARPM-TFM are obtained. Finally, the further development direction of TFPM applied to aircraft electric propulsion systems is discussed.
