Modeling of Wireless Power Transfer System for Charging Electric Vehicles Using Ansys Maxwell

In recent years, the electric vehicle market has been growing fast, so the appearance of wireless charging technology has attracted researchers worldwide more and more. Automobiles classified as electric have an electric motor in place of an internal combustion engine. Compared to traditional gasoline vehicles, electric vehicles have the following benefits: less noise, lower maintenance costs, no need for fossil fuel, zero emissions, and energy savings. The electromagnetic field is used in wireless charging technology to transfer electrical energy from a source to a load. Electric vehicles are more flexible and comfortable thanks to wireless charging technology as well as having the advantage of large transmission power, suitable for large-scale deployment. It is also safe because there are no cables used in this system compared to the hazards caused by using cables. The objective of this study is to ascertain and examine the fundamental features of a wireless power transfer (WPT) system, focusing specifically on its mutual inductance and coupling coefficient for various coil topologies. The software ANSYS Maxwell, which specializes in electromagnetic simulation, was chosen to simulate various coil designs utilized in wireless power transfer systems. The results confirmed that a circle coil structure performs better than a rectangular one. Moreover, adding more turns can raise the coupling coefficient and mutual inductance. This study helps to elucidate how altering the coil's shape affects the coupling coefficient, self-inductance, and mutual inductance. It exhibits the effect of increasing the number of turns on both mutual inductance and coupling coefficient.
