Optimizing Capacitive Sensor Designs for Precise Void Fraction Measurement in Industrial Applications

This article examines using a parallel plate capacitor sensor for accurately measuring void fraction in dielectric fluids. Unlike traditional concave and rod methods, the parallel plate configuration provides a significant advantage by ensuring a linear electric field distribution throughout the measurable volume. With a circular cross-section, the sensor uses metal plates insulated from the fluid by a high dielectric constant material. The choice of insulator is critical, as its high dielectric constant significantly enhances sensitivity, allowing for more pronounced variations in relative capacitance, considering both the sensing area and stray capacitances. Consequently, the total capacitance effectively captures subtle changes in void fraction, making the parallel plate capacitor sensor an excellent choice for applications requiring precise fluid characterization.
