Performance Evaluation of a Standalone Solar-Powered Irrigation System in Desert Regions Using PVsyst: A Comprehensive Analysis

Photovoltaic (PV) technology emerges as a prominent and readily available option within Egypt's energy landscape. This study presents a detailed analysis and design of a solar-powered irrigation system in desert regions, specifically focusing on off-grid or standalone PV systems, utilizing the PVsyst software to optimize system components and performance. The proposed system features 14 solar modules configured in a series-parallel arrangement to maximize energy capture. The design incorporates a 220V AC, 4kW inverter with a maximum power point tracking algorithm for optimal energy extraction. An AC submersible pump is specified to match the system's power output for irrigation needs, ensuring an adequate water supply for agricultural operations. The performance of the system was simulated under various conditions, revealing a maximum power output of 5.3 kW under standard test conditions and an annual average Performance Ratio of 57.2%. Furthermore, irrigation systems typically do not necessitate energy storage mechanisms, as the stored water in elevated tanks serves as an effective energy reservoir. The analysis highlights the correlation between solar irradiance and water demand, demonstrating the system's capability to meet irrigation needs efficiently during peak solar months. System losses, including PV array inefficiencies and hydraulic losses, were quantified, providing insights into potential areas for improvement in future designs.
