Ultrahigh-Sensitivity Fiber Biosensor for C-Reactive Protein Detection in Blood Sample

The accurate and rapid detection of low concentration disease biomarkers is crucial for earlier medical diagnosis. This article reported a tapered single-mode-four-core-single-mode (TSFCS) structure microfiber interference biosensor for detecting low concentration of C-reactive protein (CRP). The biosensor could detect CRP solution with a concentration as low as 1 pg/mL [diluted with phosphate buffered saline (PBS)], with an average wavelength shift of 0.6041 nm. The wavelength shift detected by the sensor for CRP in blood was essentially the same as the shift for an approximate concentration of CRP in PBS. This indicates that the proposed TSFCS sensor may have potential applications in the fields of biomedical diagnosis.
