Bidirectional CLLC Resonant Converter for EV Battery Charging Application

With the increase in popularity of electric vehicles (EVs), there is an increased need for efficient and reliable power conversion systems. This paper investigates the design and mod-eling of the CLLC resonant converter for charging/discharging EV batteries. The CLLC converter is capable of achieving high efficiency, bidirectional power flow, and soft-switching (Zero Volt-age Switching or Zero Current Switching). The features include this that is well suited for grid-to-vehicle (G2V) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G). Charge-discharge performance of converter is tested in both charging and discharging mode using PLECS software where consistent voltage and current supply to the battery, load respectively. In charger mode the input voltage is raised to match desired battery level and in discharger mode power flows back into grid line with minimal distortion. Simulation results indicate that the proposed CLLC converter is able to meet performance and efficiency requirements for conventional EV systems therefore, it can be a suitable option in future power management systems of an electric car.
