Estimating Range of UWB Outdoor Chaotic Communications

This report studies the use of path loss models in the problem of estimating the communication range of ultra-wideband UHF chaotic carrier. Three models are considered: Okumura-Hata, two-ray interference, and free space model (as a reference). Three cases of spatial arrangement of ultra-wideband UHF transceivers are considered: (1) both transceivers near the ground, (2) one transceiver in the air, (3) both transceivers in the air. As is shown, in the scope of applicability, the Okumura-Hata model and the two-ray interference model give very close results (discrepancy within 5 dB), so either can be used to estimate the communication range. When the ultra-wideband transceiver is being raised above the ground, the path loss quickly approaches that of free space (at an altitude of several hundred meters). When both transceivers are in the air, the propagation environment becomes practically the same as free space.
