Integrated Planar Array with Butler Matrix for Beam-Steering Applications

This paper presents an integrated configuration between a planar array and a Butler matrix for beam-steering applications. The integrated planar array comprises square patch antennas in 2×2 arrangement. To achieve a compact design, a miniaturized 4×4 Butler matrix based on meander-line techniques is adopted, whereby the Butler matrix and planar array boards are then integrated in a stacked manner. The overall dimensions of board integration are 72.3 mm×122.2 mm×25.8 mm. The measurement and simulation results show that the proposed configuration has the beam-steering of ±20° and ±30° at the frequency of 2.4 GHz.
