Design of a Compact Low-Profile Wideband Metasurface Antenna

A compact low-profile wideband metasurface antenna is presented in this paper. At first, the metasurface structure composed of 2 × 2 patch periodic arrangement is utilized to effectively reduce the transverse dimension of the antenna. After that, the bandwidth is effectively expanded by loading a metal via on the feeding strip to introduce resonant modes of the feeding structure at a low frequency. Simulation results show that the -10-dB impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna is 15.7% at a profile of only 0.034λ0.
