RCS Estimation of Chaff Cloud Based on PO

Traditionally, long and thin rectangular metal fragments are employed for the chaff cloud. This cloud area is very large, so that numerical matrix methods such as FDTD is almost impossible for radar cross section (RCS) calculation. In this paper, we theoretically analyze the scattered field from individual pieces of metal and then superimpose them to estimate the RCS in the chaff distribution space. The scattered field from a flat metal plate can be easily calculated using physical optics (PO). Their arrangement is twisted relative to each other, so an appropriate coordinate transformation is required. This arrangement can be generated using standard statistical distributions.
