LoRa Based Broadcast Mechanism for Supervision of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

The increasingly complicated airspace environment introduces new requirements for the supervision of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Moreover, UAVs need to broadcast the location and altitude information in order to be supervised by the authorities. Traditional wireless methods such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are difficult to cover wide regulatory areas due to the power limitations. As a low-power wide-area network technology, the long-range radio (LoRa) offers advantages such as wide coverage and strong anti-interference capabilities, presenting significant application potential for UAV supervision. Hence, in this paper, we focus on the LoRa based broadcast mechanism for UAV supervision, and conduct simulations to verify the bit error rate, maximum distance and network capacity. Meanwhile, through the UAV low-altitude experiment, we analyze the quality of communication of LoRa. As a result, LoRa communication approach is well-suited for UAV supervision scenarios.
