Comparative Investigation of BOPPPS–AI Integrated Flipped Classroom Method and Conventional Teaching Method in Mechanical Engineering Education

Traditional teaching methodology has several limitations when contents under teaching-learning are complex. Further, in outcome-based education (OBE), attainment of some program outcomes (PO) such as PO-2, PO-4, and PO-12 and course outcomes (CO) for these complex topics are usually obtained on lower side for the traditional teaching approach. BOPPPS-Bridge in, learning objective, Pre-test, Participatory learning Post-test, Summary is a student-oriented teaching methodology. In the presented work an innovative teaching methodology BOPPPS-Artificial intelligence (AI) integrated Flipped classroom-based method is adopted to get higher attainment of PO. Further, its advantages over conventional teaching methods are explored. 116 students from Pre final year of Mechanical Engineering at Yeshvantrao Chavan College of Engineering Nagpur (YCCE) were divided into groups of 58 students each. The first group used the conventional and the other group is the investigational group which utilized the BOPPPS-AI Integrated Flipped classroom method. AI tools like Chatbots are used by teacher for instructional delivery, developing study materials, and by the students at various stages of learning. Performance assessment of this work was done on two fronts; first comparing the attainment values of PO and CO for both methods and second based on a feedback questionnaire. From the results obtained, it is observed attainment values of PO and CO and learning satisfaction for the investigational group students is significantly higher than the conventional teaching group.
