FieldMaster: An Innovative Visual Field-Testing System with Enhanced Accuracy and Usability

This paper presents FieldMaster, an automated visual field perimeter designed to improve the accuracy and efficiency of visual field assessments. The system utilizes 220 green LEDs arranged within a manually constructed 45 cm hemispheric bowl, with an additional red LED positioned centrally to assist patient fixation. FieldMaster is engineered to test both central and peripheral visual fields, providing a robust alternative to traditional perimetry methods. The hardware comprises several custom-built components: a Computer Interface Board, LED Intensity Selection Board, Row and Column Selection Boards, LED Firing Board, and a Power Supply Board, all developed to ensure precise stimulus presentation and reliable operation. The software, implemented in Visual Basic .NET, incorporates interpolation techniques and color mapping to convert numerical data into a clear visual representation. Preliminary results demonstrate that FieldMaster provides accurate and consistent visual field measurements, with potential advantages in detecting visual field defects at low cost compared to conventional methods. This system aims to reduce operator variability and improve patient comfort, representing a practical advancement in visual field testing for clinical applications.
