IoT Based Gas Pipeline Monitoring System

Gas leakage have the potential to lead to significant incidents that can result in both physical harm to individuals and financial setbacks. The rise of IoT (Internet of Things) technology has shown promise in addressing these failures through the monitoring and prediction of such issues. However, challenges persist in the deployment of industrial loT-based solutions, particularly in terms of reliability, robustness, maintainability, scalability, and energy consumption. Merely being aware of the presence of a leak may not always be sufficient to take prompt corrective measures, prompting the development of leak detection techniques that also enable the pinpointing of the exact location of the leaks. The research will introduce an innovative loT-based monitoring system that integrates smart devices to effectively monitor oil and gas pipelines. Detection of oil theft is made easier as leaks cause reduced pipe vibration, pressure drops, and flow rate discrepancies within the pipelines. Each sensor node consists of an ESP8266-01, a pressure sensor, and a DS180 temperature sensor. Data from these sensors is processed on-site, aggregated in the microcontroller, and transmitted to the cloud (Thing Speak) using Wi-Fi connectivity. In case of a leak or any operational anomaly, an alert is promptly sent to the designated personnel to identify the leaking pipe. This initiative has been successfully implemented to enable real-time monitoring of pipeline operations through the Internet of Things (loT) platform.
