Simulating Blue Light Therapy for Enhanced Wound Healing Using COMSOL Multiphysics

By modifying cellular responses, blue light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, has demonstrated promise in hastening wound healing; nevertheless, its exact workings and ideal therapeutic settings are yet unknown. Understanding the light-tissue interactions and biological effects, particularly with regard to temperature and optical behavior, has been lacking in existing literature because it has mainly been empirical. In order to address this gap, COMSOL Multiphysics is used in this study to predict the effects of blue light treatment on wound healing. The optical and thermal characteristics of the dermis, hypodermis, epidermis, and wound have been integrated into a three- dimensional geometric model of the skin. This seeks to clarify the interactions at the cellular level by simulating the transmission and absorption of blue light (450 nm) using the Wave Optics Module and evaluating the thermal impacts using the Heat Transfer Module, comparing the effects of photobiomodulation on healthy skin versus skin wound. This model aims to examine comprehensive profiles of the tissue's and wound's temperature fluctuations, power absorption, and distribution of electric fields. It is anticipated that the findings would make clear the ideal circumstances for blue light treatment, improving the comprehension of its therapeutic mechanisms and providing guidance for real-world applications aimed at better wound care. This computational method aims to close a significant gap in the literature to result in more individualized and efficient chronic wound care plans by expanding the use of photobiomodulation in wound management and improving clinical results by a thorough examination of the effects of blue light therapy on wound healing.
