Smart Cane for the Visually Impaired Using FPGA Technology

This paper proposes a novel smart cane for visually impaired users, leveraging a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to enhance mobility and safety. The cane utilizes an ultrasonic sensor for obstacle detection and distance measurement. Real-time feedback is provided through an auditory alert system. As an object approaches, a vibration motor will get activated with increasing frequency, creating intuitive proximity cues. Furthermore, to improve user visibility in low-light environments, a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) automatically triggers an LED, alerting others to the user's presence. A 7-segment display provides a visual representation of the distance to obstacles. The FPGA serves as the central processing unit, enabling real-time data processing and customization of the cane's functionality to cater to individual user preferences. This integrated and cost-effective solution promotes increased situational awareness and improved navigation, highlighting the potential of advanced assistive technologies to empower visually impaired individuals and enhance their quality of life.
