Enhancing Human Machine Interface Capabilities using Bluetooth Low Energy

This article provides a thorough explanation of a system that uses proprietary protocols, Internet of Things technology, and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connection to diagnose kitchen appliances remotely. The system consists of an Appliance Control Unit (ACU) and Human-Machine Interface (HMI), where consumers can communicate with their appliances by connecting HMI to a smartphone. Data transmission integrity is assured by security mechanisms such as access restrictions and passkey authentication. There are two different approaches for communication: In one approach, GATT (Generic Attribute Profile) is used with multiple services and characteristics, while HMI processes data. Alternatively, an ACU and smartphone can establish direct communication via the HMI acting as a transreceiver. Functions of the system include getting product information, fault codes, managing various components, acknowledging sensor information and accommodating Over-The-Air (OTA) updates. Multiple tests are performed to determine its reliability and effectiveness when used in remote device diagnosis. This research provides useful knowledge on how BLE can be integrated with appliances so it enhances serviceability through user experience.
