New Strategy to Overcome the Shortage of Jobs in Microelectronics: Engineers, Doctors and Trainers

We are witnessing a galloping development of digitization across the planet, which only exists thanks to physical objects based on microelectronics. The meteoric growth in the amount of data processed is leading to exponential growth in electricity consumption, which is driving the planet into a dead end. Solutions exist in microelectronics to reduce this consumption, but with a growing need for skills at all levels of training. However, the number of students in the scientific and engineering fields is steadily declining, there are fewer and fewer applicants, the number of teaching staff specializing in the field is dwindling for a variety of reasons, and in the face of international competition, companies are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit. To counter this trend, a strategy is being put in place at both European and French level, as part of the Chips Acts and the France 2030 program. Following a presentation of the context, this article describes the approach taken at French level to meet this technical and human challenge.
