Chattering Reduction Methods

Summary

Chattering phenomenon has been one of the most important controlling challenges in recent years, and efforts have been made to eliminate or control this phenomenon in the best possible way with various methods and control strategies. This chapter introduces chattering phenomenon and its damages, and emphasizes the need to eliminate or reduce it. It also introduces the methods to eliminate or reduce chattering phenomenon. The chapter discusses MATLAB programming and implementation of the sliding‐mode control method. It shows that simulation results are considered by implementing all methodologies of chattering reduction on an inverted pendulum. One limitation of SMC in industrial implementation is the presence of unwanted and annoying chattering fluctuations which cause increasing control effort, inducing unmolded high‐frequency dynamics, reducing control accuracy, increasing heat losses in electrical circuits, and energy consumption in mechanical parts and actuators. Super‐twisting algorithm is one of the most effective methods to improve the first‐order sliding‐model control behavior and reduce chattering.
